One man is in custody and a firearm was seized following the report of a gunshot downtown early on Tuesday morning.

Prince George RCMP officers flooded downtown around 5:20 a.m., after a witness heard a loud argument between a man and woman in the 1000 block of Sixth Avenue – near the city's new parkade – followed by a single gunshot.

Officers located the man and woman near the corner of Seventh Avenue and Dominion Street, a statement released by the Prince George RCMP said.

Police officers saw the man drop a bag before fleeing on foot. The man was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

An examination of the bag discarded by the man revealed a firearm and a spent bullet casing.

The woman was uninjured and is cooperating with the police investigation.

RCMP arrested the man for firearms offences, but the investigation is ongoing.

“Investigators would like to speak with any witnesses who were in the area of Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue along Dominion Street between 5 a.m. and 5:20 a.m. and have information on what occurred this morning," RCMP spokesperson Cst. Jennifer Cooper said. "Additionally, if anyone was driving past the area and has dash cam footage we would like to speak with them, as well."
