One person is dead after an avalanche between Houston and Smithers.
The snowslide happened near the community of Telkwa on Saturday afternoon. It happened at 2 p.m. at an place known among locals as the Sun Pitt / Sun Bowl / Microwave area.
"Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue attended the scene and confirmed one person had been buried and was deceased," said Smithers RCMP Staff Sgt. Sheila White. "Recovery of the deceased person is being hampered by the dangerously high risk of a further avalanche."
As of Sunday, there was still no word as to whom the victim is, why the person was in that area or if a successful recovery had happened yet. White said the name of the victim would not be released until next of kin had been consulted.
