Even though residents won’t be able to sit down and enjoy a warm breakfast at Kin Arena this year, an annual holiday event is hoping the spirit of giving will still shine brightly.
The third Prince George Christmas Wish Breakfast is a go for 2020, but to meet COVID-19 safety protocols, organizers have planned a unique format so that gifts can be collected and that everyone involved can still receive a free hot meal before work and school.
Together with the people behind the Candy Cruise this past Halloween, a drive-thru will be set up in the CN Centre parking lot, complete with the sights and sounds associated with the Christmas Wish Breakfast the last two years.
“We need everyone's help this year,” organizers plead on the event’s Facebook page, which has been dubbed ‘The Santa Cruise’ and donations will be earmarked for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and United Way of Northern BC.
“Many of the partnering organizations and sports teams that have made this event such a success have been affected by the pandemic. We encourage you to take this on as a family, work place, community organization or on your own. Show your support with a convoy of company vehicles or load all the kids into the minivan.
“We can help those in need while having fun, being fed and joining together in safe ways.”
Residents will enter the lot via Keller Street off 18th Avenue and will be welcomed by lights flashing off Prince George RCMP, Fire Rescue, and Ambulance Service vehicles.
Then, a story will be told as you drive along about how Santa needs help this year collecting gifts for marginalized kids and families so they may have a festive season.
Breakfast will be handed safely to the first 1,000 people inside their vehicle, set to include a wrap, muffin and coffee.
Santa and Mrs. Claus are set to make a guest appearance, along with the Grinch and local first responders.
Though nothing will be done as it normally would, families are encouraged to get creative when they drive in the lot, such as wearing Santa hats, ugly Christmas sweaters or blasting music in their vehicles.
The Santa Cruise is scheduled for Dec. 8 from 7 to 9 a.m.
Since its inception in 2018, the Christmas Wish Breakfast has brought in more than 3,000 gifts.
