Even through the most unusual of circumstances, everyone deserves to be shown kindness.

A message Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern BC (BIGSNBC) is hoping to echo across Prince George during its annual Pink Shirt Day is coming up later this month.

2021’s theme is ‘Spark Kindness,’ which is aimed to encourage everyone to stand up against bullying.

Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 as an act of kindness in a small Nova Scotian town, where Davis Shepherd, Travis Price and their friends organized a protest to wear pink in sympathy for a Grade Nine boy who was bullied for wearing pink.

It has since grown into a movement where people across the country wear pink in February.

According to BIGSNBC, more than 900 pink shirts and masks have been pre-ordered, but there are other ways to contribute to the city-wide fundraiser.

All proceeds are set to go to the non-profit’s youth mentoring programs in Prince George and across the region.

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, residents can purchase pink treats from the following businesses participating in Pink Shirt Day (in alphabetical order):

  • Blissful Bubbles Boutique = Large bath bombs and shower steamers
  • Carl's Jr. Canada = Pink milkshakes
  • COBS Bread = Raspberry and white chocolate scones
  • Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory = Milk chocolate marshmallows on a stick
  • Tim Hortons = Pink donuts

BIGSNBC is also hosting an online auction from Feb. 24 to March 3.
