While we’ve already seen -44 C temperatures this winter, the Coldest Night of the Year is not yet upon us.

That’s because the Coldest Night of the Year is actually a family-friendly walk that raises money for charities serving hungry, homeless, and hurting people in the Prince George community.

The annual event is a fundraiser for, and is presented by, AWAC; An Association Advocating for Women and Community.

Opened in 1994, AWAC is a non-profit organization that started with a vision to provide safe and supportive shelter for street-involved women and female youth.

However, over the years the organization's services began to expand with the growing need.

With the rate of homelessness increasing in the community, AWAC created the Housing First, Outreach, Housing Readiness and Olive's Branch transitional housing programs.

The shelter is now open to men during the day, and all programs apart from Housing Readiness is open to all genders.

It is now AWAC’s goal to help move both men and women from homelessness to independent living by offering various levels of supports throughout the different stages of housing.

The Coldest Night of the Year Walk takes place on Feb. 22, 2020.

You can register as an individual or team and the funds raised will go directly to AWAC.

As of this publication, there are 13 teams and 44 walkers registered for the event, which begins at 5:15 p.m. from St. Giles Presbyterian Church (1500 Edmonton St.).
