There are 12 Chinese zodiac animals used to represent years and 2019 is the year of the pig.
According to myths, the pig was the last to arrive when the Jade Emperor called for the great meeting because he overslept.
Another story says that a wolf destroyed his house. He had to rebuild his home before he could set off for the party so when he arrived, he was the last one and could only take twelfth place.
To celebrate the new year, the Exploration Place is putting on a free fireworks display for everyone to see. However, the fireworks also coincide with the Exploration Place’s Way Late Play Date.
With multiple events going on, parking will be very busy and the building and bathrooms at Exploration Place will be closed to the public.
But if you want to take in the free light show, you can head down to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park near the Exploration Place at 333 Becott Pl. on Feb. 9.
Expect the fireworks to go off at 8:00 p.m.
Or you can head over to the Hart Community Centre to celebrate Chinese New Year. This family event will include a Chinese style dinner, dancing and a DJ. Tickets are available at the Hart Community Centre office, and are $30 for adults and $15 for children.
Another Lunar New Year Celebration is taking place the day prior (Feb. 8) at the First Baptist Church at 483 Gillet Street.
This event is hosted by the College of New Caledonia’s International Education department and will feature a Chinese buffet, performances and prizes. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12 (children under three are free).
You can get your tickets at the CNC International Education department or CNC’s Student Union.
