Clara Hughes, the only Canadian athlete to have won medals in both the winter and summer Olympics, is coming to Prince George next month to help celebrate the YMCA of Northern B.C.'s 50th anniversary.
The 42-year-old Winnipeg native will be in the city on Nov. 19 where she will speak to about 2,000 elementary and high school students from the Northern Sport Centre during the day and then host a community impact session that evening where she will share her story.
It will be held at the Canfor Theatre at UNBC, 7 p.m. start. Tickets are $35 plus GST and are available for purchase at the YMCA of Northern B.C.
Hughes is one of only five people to have podium finishes in the Winter and Summer versions of the Games and is the only person ever to have won multiple medals in both.
With six medals - two in cycling and four in speed skating - Hughes also is tied with swimmer Cindy Klassen as Canada's most decorated Olympian.
"It is our hope that Clara will impact children, youth and the community at large, like she was, to be inspired to be active for so many reasons: building positive self esteem, stress reduction, building healthy friendships and perhaps even to inspire a dream to be an Olympic athlete," said YMCA of Northern B.C. chief executive officer Amanda Alexander.
