The trend of successful building permit numbers within the city of Prince George is still going strong as the city continues to see monthly numbers reported as either on par or exceeding previous years.
In total the city received 49 permits in October for a value of $24, 015, 059.

“This is a kind of a routine we have fallen into, seeing high numbers of building permits in the summaries, and as you can see from the numbers ahead of us, yes, in the pandemic year we did see a slight slowdown but really it’s much higher than we had been seeing in decades past,” explained Coun. Garth Frizzell during the Nov. 8 council meeting.
He then asked Deanna Wasnik, director of planning and development, how much longer the city expects this upward trend to last.
“I would say it is a positive development forecast for the next year and the next years coming,” answered Wasnik, adding that recent subdivision applications are the most she’s seen within her time with the city.
“It’s certainly an indicator that there will be building permits to follow those lots being created.”
Coun. Brian Skakun added that these numbers are also an indicator of more jobs within the community.
“This is the evidence right here, quite often we look at the numbers and say well $1.2 billion over the last six years those are great numbers, but at the end of the day as Coun. Skakun has indicated, this shows jobs,” said Mayor Lyn Hall.
“Prince George was identified last month as being the number one city for job recovery in the entire province of B.C. and it is a big deal. It is a huge deal and I think that is indicative of young folks being able to stay in Prince George and get a trade, do whatever it is they choose to,” added Hall.
So far the city’s year-to-date totals are also on par with previous years.
From January to October 2021, the city has seen 412 permits total valued at $188 million. The same time frame in 2020 amounted to 461 permits for $181 million and in 2019 the city saw 541 permits for $194 million.
