The intersection at Highway 16 and Domano Boulevard - known as the most dangerous intersection in northern B.C. - had major improvements completed at the end of October, 2009, and the number of accidents that have occurred in recent months indicate it's a safer place to be than it once was.

Only 13 incidents have been reported during January and June, 2010.

It's hard to say how significant that is compared to previous year's totals - 54 accidents occurred in 2009, 69 in '08 and 61 in '07 - because traditionally the biggest crash numbers come in December.

The improvements made to the intersection, which began in August 2009, included some major reconstruction. There are now two left turn lanes, two through lanes and one right turn lane on Highway 16. Tyner and Domano each have four lanes, including one left turn, two through lanes and one right turn lane.

IDL Projects Inc. was awarded a $7.8-million contract to improve the intersection and the province contributed $5.1 million, with the federal government also contributing money for the highway improvement project.

ICBC contributed $56,200 to add a dual left turn bay, acceleration lane, raised medians and signal improvements. This project was completed in partnership with the City of Prince George, which contributed $400,000.
