Operation Red Nose has launched its Smart Ride home campaign for the holiday season - and is seeking volunteers.
So far, 150 have completed their applications, meaning the volunteer effort to keep drunk drivers off the road needs about 200 more for a successful season.
"It's not too late to become an Operation Red Nose volunteer," said spokeswoman Andrea Johnson.
Volunteers must be 19 years old, have a valid driver's license, and fill out a required criminal record check that is processed by the RCMP.
Volunteers can be designated drivers, navigators, drive the escort vehicles or answer phones out of Operation Red Nose headquarters at ICBC.
On average, about 15 teams of three will be on call each night of service, working from 8 p.m. - 3 a.m.
This year, Operation Red Nose will be in service 10 nights -- Nov. 25 and 26, Dec. 2 and 3, Dec. 10 and 11, Dec. 17 and 18, Dec. 30 and New Year's Eve.
"We're asking people to form their own teams and come help us out for one night," said Johnson. "Businesses, community groups and organizations are also putting their own teams together.
Entering its 14th season, Operation Red Nose is organized in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Prince George Nechako, the RCMP, and ICBC.
Any donations that are received go directly back into youth and amateur sport in Prince George.
In 2010, about 300 ORN volunteers provided a record 1,123 safe rides home during nine operating nights.
