Early this morning, a large piece of equipment for Canfor Pulp's major upgrades to its Northwood mill will make its way through the city.

The black liquor storage tank -- which is 76-feet long and will be transported on a 170-foot tractor-trailer rig -- looks like a missile. It's being delivered from Portland, Ore. where it was constructed.

"We thought we should let people know what's going on," said Canfor Pulp official David Scott.

Northwood is in the midst of a $100-million upgrade, funded by a federal government green subsidy program.

Northwood is using the money to upgrade its recovery boiler, which is expected to significantly reduce odours and fine particulate air pollutants at the mill.

The company has already undertaken some preliminary work -- including engineering and some foundation work -- but the bulk of the construction is planned for the months of August and September in 2011 during a plant shut down.

The project is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2011.
