Northern Health sees second-highest single-day increase in COVID cases on Friday

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported 286 new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region on Friday.

It was the second-highest number of cases ever reported in the region in a single day. The single-day record was set on Jan. 12, when 299 cases were reported.

In addition, one new COVID-related death was reported in northern B.C. on Friday, bringing the region’s death toll from the pandemic to 284.

As of Friday, 31 people in the Northern Health region were hospitalized with COVID-19, including 10 listed in intensive care, the B.C. CDC reported.

The number of active cases in the region increased to 1,286 on Friday, up from 1,147 on Thursday.

Since the start of the pandemic there have been 24,380 cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region.

A total of 497,965 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the north.

As of Thursday, 89 per cent of people aged 12 and older in the Prince George local health area had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 85 per cent had received two doses, the B.C. CDC reported. In addition, 43 per cent of children aged five to 11 years old had received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
