Cases continue to jump up in the north, as there are 72 new COVID-19 cases announced in Northern Health today (Sept. 8) and there are now 721 active cases in the region.

Throughout the province, officials are reporting 814 new cases of COVID-19, including 16-epi-linked cases for a total of 5,550 active cases.

Epi-linked means that public health investigations have shown that cases meet the case definition for COVID-19 but may not have been tested for a number of reasons.

Of the active cases, 261 people are in hospital and 129 of them are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.

In the past 24 hours, no new deaths have been reported for an overall total of 1,842. No new heath-care facility outbreaks have been announced but there are still 21 active outbreaks including Jubilee Lodge in Prince George.

As of yesterday officials are reporting 18 residents, two of which have been epi-linked, and one staff who have tested positive for COVID-19.

The outbreak was first declared on Sept. 5

Officials say from Aug. 31-Sept. 6 people not fully vaccinated accounted for 77.8 per cent of cases and from Aug. 24-Sept. 6, they accounted for 85.9 per cent of hospitalizations.4

Since December 2020, the Province has administered 7,557,556 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.

As of Wednesday, Sept. 8 85 per cent or  3,949,169 of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 77.7 per cent 3,601,169 received their second dose.

In addition, 85.8 per cent or 3,711,066 of all eligible adults in B.C. have received their first dose and 78.6 per cent 3,400,194 received their second dose.

Further details were also released this week about B.C.’s vaccine card system which comes into effect on Sept. 13.
