Northern Health's energy efforts helped the health agency save $250,000 last year.

Six facilities took part in conservation projects using funding through the province's Carbon Neutral Capital Program.

It reduced natural gas consumption by three per cent in 2014 from the previous year for a total of seven per cent since 2009, when the program started. Electrical consumption dropped by two per cent in 2014 compared to 2013.

"We put a strong emphasis on being energy conscious including finding ways to reduce costs for facility maintenance, and utilizing the savings for health care related programs," said Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health's board chair in Monday's press release.

"We operate in a uniquely challenging northern climate, but our staff continues to find creative and innovative means to be more efficient despite those challenges."

Fortis BC and BC Hydro also give incentives to encourage reducing energy use and costs, the release said.
