Northern Health region nearing 1,000 active COVID cases

Northern B.C. saw 294 new cases of the coronavirus reported over the weekend

The Northern Health region saw 294 new cases of COVID-19 reported over the weekend, pushing the number of active cases in the region up to a record 931.
The number of active cases was up from 782 on Friday. The number of active cases in the north exceeded that of the Island Health region and was only 14 behind Vancouver Coastal Health, despite Northern Health having less than a quarter the population of the Vancouver Coastal region.
As of Monday, 41 in the Northern Health region were hospitalized with COVID-19, including 16 listed in intensive care, according to data reported by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
Nine COVID-related deaths were reported in the province over the weekend, but none in the north. The provincial death toll from the pandemic rose to 1,865, including 164 residents of the Northern Health region.
As of Monday, 85.8 per cent of eligible British Columbians (people aged 12 and older) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 78.4 were fully vaccinated. A total of 7.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., including 338,375 in the Northern Health region.
A total of 1,984 new cases were reported in B.C. on Monday, with 5,825 cases remaining active. A total of 278 people were hospitalized in the province, with 139 in intensive care.
