Northern Health eclipsed a new milestone over the final July weekend in terms of COVID-19.

The region saw one new positive case from the last 72 hours, July 25 to 27, raising its total to 80 as B.C.'s overall curve continues to trend upward after 81 new ones were recorded.

According to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry from her briefing today (July 27), the province now has a grand total of 3,500 cases since the virus hit the west coast.

That's 264 active cases, including 11 people in hospital, three in critical care and 3,043 recoveries, equating to 87 per cent of the total.

There were two additional deaths and the toll now stands at 193.

The new case in northern B.C. is linked to the community outbreak on Haida Gwaii, Dr. Henry explained, as declared by Northern Health on Friday (July 24) in the northwest section of the authority, which now has 13 active cases and one recovery.

This means, since July 10, there have been no active cases in the northern interior, which includes Prince George, one in the northeast and 14 in the northwest.

"The Haida Nation has been active on supporting its members," said Dr. Henry.

"One of the key things in declaring the outbreak last week was being able to pull the community together and make sure there's resources available to those who need it."

All of the active cases are self-isolating and clear processes are in place for identifying and informing close contacts of those infected so people take necessary precautions.

The north had its largest single-day spike in cases on Thursday (July 23) with eight new cases in 24 hours, all connected to Haida Gwaii.
