Northern Capitals make big late-season splash by sweeping Lakers

Morning 3-1 win closed out three-game series with geographical rivals

Three down, seven to go.

The Northern Capitals completed the first of their three remaining weekends of the 2019-20 BC Female Midget AAA (FMAAA) League season, doing so in intense physical fashion with a 3-0 series sweep of the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers.

Sunday morning’s (Feb. 9) contest ended in a 3-1 victory for Prince George’s team, jumping on quick passes in the offensive zone, and improving their overall record to 13-10-2.

The six-point stint puts the ladies two back of Fraser Valley for second place in the league, but the Rush have two games at hand that will be played a week after the Caps end their season.

Forwards Pyper Alexander and Hailey Armstrong combined for four points yesterday, including assisting on each other’s goals, while goaltender Tessa Sturgeon notched her seventh win of the year and her second in three days.

Armstrong added to her team rookie-scoring lead, now with 14 points through 25 games.

The 14-year-old got her team back into Sunday’s game by netting the puck with 107 seconds left in the first period to tie it up at 1-1.

Alexander provided the lone assist on Armstrong’s seventh of the season and carried the momentum into the second stanza as the Williams Lake product reached the 10-goal plateau just 19 seconds in.

Armstrong and Maria Ayre, the other rookie forward on this year’s roster, assisted on Alexander’s eventual game-winner.

The Northern Capitals’ 3-1 insurance marker came with 62 seconds left in regulation off the stick of Brooklyn Hutchings and Ocean Andersen with the assist.

The final buzzer sounded off after what was a tight-knit battle between the two clubs, with the Caps prevailing in pink on Friday (Feb. 7) and Saturday as well (Feb. 8).

The Caps have the Family Day long weekend off and hit the road the week after, but will return to Prince George for the final weekend of their 2019-20 season, Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 against Fraser Valley.

They’re set to play four games in three days, Feb. 21 to 23, against the league-last Vancouver Island Seals, who are still without a win at 0-28.
