A major hockey tournament that was to be played in northern B.C. later this year has been cancelled as a result of COVID-19.

However, Hockey Canada says it plans to return to Dawson Creek in 2021 for the National Women's Under-18 Championship.

The tournament was originally planned for Nov. 2 to 8.

“At various rates, provinces from coast-to-coast-to-coast have started moving ahead with their phased re-opening, but as it has been since the season was cancelled, Hockey Canada’s priority remains the health and safety of all participants and the general public,” said Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney and President Scott Smith said in a joint statement on Thursday (Sept. 3).

“We believe the decision to cancel these three events is the safest decision given the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic at the local level, as well as the international implications associated with these events.”

The tournament pins Canada's top women's hockey players 18 years of age and younger province against province, with the gold medal game to be nationally-televised.

Next year, if it follows through, will mark the second time Dawson Creek will host the championship since 2012.
