Northern B.C. sees 356 COVID-19 cases in seven day period

Region continues to see cases increase

The numbers don't lie. 

In the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Health Service Delivery Area of Case Residence report from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), northern B.C. recorded 356 cases from Jan. 16 to 21, 2021. 

The Northern Interior (which includes Prince George) there were 113 cases while Northwest B.C. had the highest total with 150. 

Northeast B.C. saw under 100 cases with 93. 

From Jan. 1, 2020 to Jan. 21, 2021, the Northern Interior has tallied 1,488 cases while the Northeast has recorded 747 and the Northwest region has seen 871. 

As of this publication (Jan. 23), the region has a total of 3,109 cases found since March of last year when the virus hit the north. 

There are currently 534 active cases with 46 in hospital, 18 of which are in critical care. 

After yesterday's update (Jan. 22), the death toll for Northern Health is at 55. 

A COVID-19 outbreak at University Hospital of Northern BC's (UHNBC) Internal Medicine Unit continues to wreak havoc. 

On Friday, Northern Health announced two additional deaths, which brings the death toll to five since the outbreak was declared on Dec. 29.

There has been another infection discovered in an IMU patient, which brings the to-date total to 32, broken down among 20 patients and 12 staff that have tested positive for the virus. 

Jubilee Lodge in Prince George has also recorded another positive case involving a staff member. 

An outbreak was declared at the long-term care facility on Dec. 12, 2020, and COVID-19 has since claimed the lives of 14 residents.

Northern Health says there are two active cases among the 48 patients with lab-confirmed infections and 32 recoveries; 14 staff have now contracted the virus in under a month.
