No federal dollars for PAC

P3 Canada has rejected the city's application for funding and support to build the proposed Prince George Regional Performing Arts Centre.

P3 Canada has rejected the city's application for funding and support to build the proposed Prince George Regional Performing Arts Centre.

The city had applied in June to the federal Crown corporation, which is mandated to promote public-private partnerships. Had the application been successful, the project could have been eligible for federal grants worth up to 25 per cent of the estimated $42.5 million cost.

"We were disappointed to here that we were not approved by P3 Canada," performing arts centre chairperson Tom Madden said. "We're going to continue to work with the city to see what options are available. We're going to to continue to strengthen our business plan."

In addition, Madden said the society is open to reassess the model for the centre - which currently calls for a stand-alone building with a 800-seat, multi-use theatre, a 250-seat 'black box' theatre, multi-use rehearsal space, public foyer, reception space and administrative offices.

"We'd welcome the opportunity to have a dialog with anyone who has an interest in partnering up," he said.

In a letter to city council, P3 Canada CEO John McBride said the agency would be open to receiving an updated application in future years.

"Based on the board's review of your application ... the project requires further development and identification of other necessary funding sources."

City council is expected to review the letter at Monday's regular council meeting.
