The explosion at Lakeland Sawmill has been deemed a non-criminal event by the RCMP. The criminal aspect of the investigation has been closed.
According to Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass, the next phase of the investigation can now begin. It will be under the auspices of the BC Coroners' Service but conducted on the ground by WorksafeBC, the BC Safety Authority and Prince George Fire / Rescue.
The explosion and fire at Lakeland Mills happened Monday night at about 9:40 p.m. when 24 sawmill workers were inside the affected building. It has so far taken the life of two workers, and injured several others, some of whom are still in hospital in critical condition.
The planer mill next door had another 25 workers on-site who were not injured.
