No B.C. banner for Prince George senior boys volleyball teams, girls still in the hunt

Here’s how local schools are shaping up at AAA, AA, A provincials

There are seven Prince George volleyball teams competing at championships across the province in different levels of competition.

The College Heights Cougars (CHSS) advanced to the quarterfinals last night (Nov. 28) after defeating hometown-rival Duchess Park (DPSS) in the Round of 16 at the Senior Boys AA tournament in Langley.

However, they were met with some tough competition in number two-seeded George Elliot Secondary (Lake Country) and would fall in four sets, including a two-point difference in the third frame.

The final scores were 19-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 14-25 Thursday evening and this now means the best position the Cougars can finish is fifth place.

They take on the Pacific Academy Breakers this afternoon (Nov. 29) and must win that contest to get to the fifth/sixth-place game.

Meanwhile, the Condors immediately soared back to victory after losing to CHSS earlier in the day and getting relegated to the consolation bracket.

Duchess Park swept the Alpha Secondary Aztecs 25-11 and 25-20 and move on to the next round today in the continued fight for ninth place, the best they can finish in the 16-team tournament, facing W.L. Seaton.

While the two boys’ teams were deprived from a B.C. banner, five Prince George senior girls squads still have a chance to potentially bring home some hardware.

After day one of the AAA championships, both Duchess Park and Prince George Secondary claimed third place in their respective pools and each going 1-2.

The 2019 city-champion Condors, ranked #14 going into provincials, will face #3-ranked South Kamloops today in Langley.

The #11 Polars will meet the #8 R.A. McMath Wildcats (Richmond) this morning in the knockout stage and should they win, they could be paired up against top-seeded Little Flower Academy in the quarters.

In the heart of the Okanagan, the 2019 Senior Girls AA Volleyball Provincials are taking place where the North Central Zone-champion Kelly Road Roadrunners and D.P. Todd Trojans both finished pool-play without a victory.

The Roadrunners were swept in their opening match with York House, and forced a deciding third set in the two games that followed, but lost both of them to Langley Christian and John Barsby (Nanaimo).

Kelly Road will face St. Thomas More in the Round of 16 and must win-out to claim the title.

The Trojans, on the other hand, failed to win a single set in their group, dropping two-set decisions against M.E.I., West Point Grey Academy and Surrey Christian.

D.P. Todd may still have a chance, however, as the city runner-ups are taking on Brentwood Secondary, who also finished 0-3 in their group.

Finally, the Cedars Christian Senior Girls are battling in the 2019 A championships, but they too went 0-3 on the first day of the tournament deep in the Kootenays.

The 12th-ranked Eagles will fight for their shot at the B.C. title this morning against Immaculata Regional School (Kelowna) in the knockout round.
