The NextRide automatic vehicle location system is now operational on Prince George buses.

BC Transit has launched its NextRide automatic vehicle location technology on the Prince George Transit System.

The technology allows transit users to see real-time information about where their bus is, estimated arrival times for stops and automated onboard stop announcements for riders.

“Council is pleased that the residents of Prince George will soon have improved access to transit in our city,” Mayor Lyn Hall said in a statement issued last week. “The implementation of NextRide technology will immediately make travelling by bus more attractive, convenient, and user-friendly for riders. We would like to thank BC Transit for their partnership in putting this important technology into the hands of residents.”

Transit users can access the information by downloading the Transit App, or online using Google Maps. However, it will take several more weeks for Google Maps to start sharing that information, the statement issued by BC Transit said.

“We’re excited to be introducing our NextRide technology in Prince George to help make transit more accessible and convenient for our existing and new transit riders,” BC Transit president and CEO Erinn Pinkerton said.” We know this technology helps enhance the transit experience for our customers and provides important information that helps us improve route planning that benefits all transit riders.”

Technology to allow bus riders to pay electronically using a tap-enabled debit card, credit card or ApplePay will be coming to Prince George in the spring, BC Transit announced earlier this year.
