The long-awaited women's jail in Prince George is expected to be completed later this month.
"Having a facility in Prince George will enable women in northern B.C. to stay in their own community, or closer to home, with opportunities for visits by family," said Jess Gunnarson, B.C. Corrections spokeserson with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
"It will also make it easier for the women to make community contacts for support and a successful re-entry into the community."
The new 1,400-square-meter (15,550 sq.ft.) centre, attached to the main Prince George Correctional Centre on Highway 16 East, will provide 20 cells for women who've been remanded or sentenced to custody by courts in the North. Read more about the cells and programs in The Citizen.
