Besides the usual meats, breads, preserves, baked goods and other Farmers' Market staples, there's a few new things offered up this season.
Educational talks, visits from chefs, special events on holiday weekends and a photo contest are some of the newest initiatives hitting the downtown weekend event.
The talks have been created to connect the public with the local producers such as Gayle McCue from Nature Lovin' Hippy Natural Vegan Soaps, who takes the podium Saturday at 1 p.m. in the indoor market annex called In A Lather to discuss simpler, less toxic products for cleaning yourself and your home.
On Saturday, July 23 at 1 p.m., Cynthia Andal of Andalberry Farm shares secrets of local plants' cosmetic and healing properties.
Chefs will be at the market on Saturdays to make purchases and celebrate the local bounty. Watch for them and get ready for a taste of our local culture.
On Canada Day weekend, visitors will be treated to a piece of cake beginning at 11 a.m.
The Prince George Farmers' Market Association will be hosting a photo contest as a means of acquiring some images they will use in promotional material to celebrate the market. The contest aims to capture the culture of the market, its vendors, customers and products.
Any images related to the market can be posted to the Prince George Farmers' Market Facebook page or printed and submitted. The photos that best capture the market culture will be used in promotional material and the photographers will get Farmers' Market gift certificates.
The Prince George Farmers' Market is open every Saturday at the corner of Third Avenue and George Street, indoors and outdoors, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
