One of the two judges newly appointed to the provincial courts began their law career in Prince George.

Judge Edna Ritchie, whose appointment is effective March 20, articled and practised in the city with Hope Heinrich after graduating from law school at the University of British Columbia in 1979. Ritchie's subsequent career was primarily spent in the Lower Mainland where she joined the Lawyers Insurance Fund at the Law Society of British Columbia and handled claims against lawyers.

Judge Laura Bakan's appointment is effective April 2 and both Bakan and Ritchie will be "assigned to a location determined by the chief judge to meet the needs of the court."

Bakan was called to the bar in 1984 and spent her career practising with Vancouver's Guild Yule with a focus on civil litigation.

The two positions were filled to address recent retirements and vacancies in the provincial court system.
