New Duchess Park school officially opens May 7

Last week, Duchess Park hosted our new students and parents from Lakewood junior secondary and the online transfer process. The group joined staff in the theatre for a presentation followed by a tour of the school. Term three students who received Honour Roll, Principal's List and Work Habits participated in a recognition event. They were treated to ice cream by the administration and counsellors.

May 7 is the official opening of the new Duchess Park school. Several honoured guests will be speaking. The event will include the students and staff of the school. Thank you to the team of dedicated students and staff who have got our concession up and running. The concession is now open four days a week. Profits are going towards the Flying U ranch trip, PAC, Me to We and class projects.

Teachers and students of Highglen Montessori elementary school give a big shout out of "thanks" to the PAC for the purchase of new gym equipment - everyone is enjoying the fun part of physical exercise and with the nice weather is taking advantage to work on their sport skills outside.

The relay teams are practicing during their lunch hour and sometimes before school to get the baton handoff just right for their meet, next Tuesday at Masich Stadium. Parents are welcome to come and cheer for our teams from Grade 3 to Grade 7.

Intermediate students welcomed a conservation officer who spoke to them about the Bear Aware program and wilderness safety tips for themselves and their families. Students welcome author Diane Swanson next week. She will be presenting her work and giving appropriate presentations to each level of classes, an exciting time, happening in the library. Garden meetings have been taking place to further develop our garden. The seeds have been planted and are being tended to by the students and will be transplanted when they are ready.

Volunteer lists are available for families of the school to take a turn to tend to the garden, by watering and weeding, during the summer months.

The results of Heather Park middle school's ninth annual speech contest are in. On the evening of April 21, 18 Grade 8 students presented their well-researched and much-practiced speeches to an appreciative audience.

Advancing to represent HPMS at the upcoming Speech Arts Festival are: Paige B, topic: Child Abuse; Paige E:, topic: The Media and People; Donovan L, topic: How to Be a Gentleman, and Sydney K, topic: Self Esteem.

Honourable mentions go to Nicole R: Optimism, and Erica H: The Emotions of Plants. Well done!

On April 23, students and staff at HPMS enjoyed a wonderful performance by the high calibre performing jazz and concert bands from South Kamloops secondary school.

Congratulations to our beginner (silver) and intermediate (gold) bands for their excellent results at the MusicFest Fanfare on Friday. We appreciate Mrs. Haughian's wonderful leadership and our students' dedication to performance excellence in music.

Sharpen your pencils; challenge your brains. For the 10th and final time, middle school students at HPMS have the opportunity to participate in several different math contests arranged by math enrichment teacher, Ms. B.J. Foulds. Grades 6, 7 and 8 students participated in the Mathematica contest on April 14, and will also be completing the Gauss challenge on May 12. In addition, the Grade 8s completed the CNC Junior Preliminary Math contest on March 31. These young mathematicians are now waiting to find out who will advance to the CNC final Jr. Math contest to be held sometime in early May. To culminate their year-long math enrichment studies, several of these top math students will receive recognition for their efforts at our end-of-the-year awards ceremony.

All students at Sacred Heart school will participate in the P.G. Speech Arts & Drama Festival at UNBC on Thursday. Primary children will compete in Choric Drama while intermediate students will participate in Shakespearean Scenes. Vancouver's Science World will provide a presentationaboutSporting Science on May 3 at Sacred Heart school. Action Schools will visit Sacred Heart school on Friday to host a hands-on workshop, which is designed to train intermediate students to organize games and recess activities in the playground.

Loads of exciting things happening at Vanway elementary. Students are busy practicing for relays which will be held on Thursday at Masich Place. Come out and cheer for our school. Don't forget that Friday is a non-instructional day. May 3 will be Music Monday Vanway Trebles and Friends will be performing at an assembly at 9:30 a.m. as well as joining hundreds of other schools across Canada and around the world at 10 a.m. with the theme song Sing, Sing. May 4, Vanway Trebles and Friends will perform at 7 p.m. in the gym. All guests are welcome. On May 5, class photos will be taken. May 6 is Science World at the school.
