New community garden takes root

UNBC and Prince George Christian Reformed Church are partners in a new community garden project.

UNBC and Prince George Christian Reformed Church are partners in a new community garden project.

Growing Community Garden has a mission to be a place of community enhancement through research, education and celebration, said Rebecca Bruser, garden activity co-ordinator and UNBC student earning her masters degree in psychology.

The focus will be on green gardening practices, local food production and good nutrition.

Much of the produce (tomatoes, cabbage, beans, peas, potatoes, ground cherries and herbs) harvested at GCG's two sites at UNBC and a 1.25-acre site on church property,1905 Willow St., will be given to community food banks and groups like Families First, said Bruser.

Planned workshops and demonstrations will include cold climate gardening, composting, food preparation, preserving food and nutrition.

"And eventually the gathering area will be available for story telling, musical performance, theatre and art," said Bruser.

Call Bruser at 250-981-8478 or committee chair Scott Green at 250-960-5817 for more information.
