Northern Health will soon have a new chief medical health officer.

Effective the start of June, Dr. Ronald Chapman will step into the position, taking over from Dr. David Bowering after eight years at the post, Northern Health said in a press release Wednesday.

Bowering will become the medical health officer for the northwest region on a half-time basis, based out of Terrace.

"I would like to thank Dr. Bowering for his exceptional leadership of population health and public health over the years," said Northern Health chief executive officer Cathy Ulrich in a press release. "I am pleased that he'll continue work with us in another capacity and I'm confident that the chief medical health officer role will continue to benefit from strong leadership under Dr. Chapman."

Chapman is a physician with a fellowship in community medicine and extensive experience in the leadership and management of health services with a focus on community health.

He joined Northern Health in 2007, and has most recently been working as regional director of the Northern Cancer Control Strategy. He will continue in this role along with his new responsibilities, based in Prince George.

Over the course of his career Bowering has also served as medical health officer for the northwest, northeast and northern interior areas of northern B.C.

In addition to returning to the northwest, Bowering will also continue leading several regional population health strategies including Road Health, and Northern Health's Men's Health initiative.

Details of compensation packages were not provided. According to a statement of executive compensation filed with the provincial government, Chapman earned $213,210 in base salary as the regional director of the Northern Cancer Control Strategy in 2009-10. Bowering's pay was not listed.
