Enbridge president Al Monaco will have some new responsibilities beginning next month.
This week the Calgary-based pipeline company announced Monaco, 52, would also assume the title of CEO effective Oct. 1. Current CEO Patrick D. Daniel, 65, had previously announced his intention to retire after 12 years in the position and three decades working for the company.
Monaco, who already sits on the company's board of directors, takes on the new duties at a key time for Enbridge as it is trying to get the $6 billion Northern Gateway project approved. The proposal calls for building a 1,177-km pipeline from Alberta's oil sands to Kitimat and it's currently be review by the National Energy Board.
Enbridge currently boasts the "the world's longest crude oil and liquids transportation system" with operations in Canada and the United States.
Monaco joined Enbridge in 1995 and was named president in February.
