NDP strengthen lead

The provincial NDP have widened their lead in the run up to the May 14 election, according to a new public opinion poll released Thursday.

The provincial NDP have widened their lead in the run up to the May 14 election, according to a new public opinion poll released Thursday.

The NDP received the support of 48 per cent of respondents, according to the survey conducted by Angus Reid, up one percentage point from the same company's results last month. The governing Liberals fell to 28 per cent in March, down three points from February. The Greens, up one point, and the Conservatives, up two, are tied for third at 11 per cent each.

Prince George-Mackenzie Liberal candidate Mike Morris said he doesn't put too much stock into the polling data.

"I've never believed the polls, the only poll that really counts is on voting day," he said. "If you look across Canada and you look at the number of polls that have taken place just prior to the various provincial elections, none of them were accurate."

In the north, the Angus Reid poll has the NDP in front at 48 per cent followed by the Liberals at 21 per cent, the Greens at 17 per cent and the Conservatives at 10 per cent.

NDP leader Adrian Dix topped the list for who would make the best premier, with 31 per cent of respondents picking the current opposition leader. Premier Christy Clark placed second at 16 per cent, Conservative leader John Cummins was third at six per cent and Green leader Jane Sterk picked up four per cent. Meanwhile, 22 per cent of respondents chose none of the above and 20 per cent weren't sure.

The survey was done online on Monday and Tuesday and is considered accurate to within plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
