Carrier Sekani Family Services, in partnership with Nezul Be Hunuyeh Child & Family Services Society, will host a National Child Day Open House focusing on the rights of children on Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at 1145 Second Ave.
"There will be some children's activities, drumming, and some information around the rights of children and a bit more of a focus on the rights of children in care because that's what people want to know more about," said Kayla Brownscombe, youth services manager for Carrier Sekani.
Children will enjoy activities like colouring and crafts and the youth from the Walk Tall program will make some posters outlining the rights of children.
The Walk Tall program is geared for all youth in the community between 12 and 18 years old and offers recreation, prevention and education workshops and youth leadership and development.
On the night before the National Child Day celebration, the youth will meet and discuss the rights of children and what other youth are doing to advocate for children and youth in Canada and they will also be educated about their rights.
The Walk Tall youth will then pick one right and make a poster and then the posters will be on display at the National Child Day celebration.
"So they're learning about the rights of a child and then we will display it in a way that's accessible to people - they will be child-friendly versions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child so they are accessible to those who want to learn about it," said Brownscombe.
There will be pamphlets and books and the posters that are appealing to youth and children and something they can understand, she added.
There will be a draw for a traditional foods basket featuring a variety of prepared salmon and soap berries.
Everyone is welcome to attend the open house.
