The man who died in cells at the Prince George RCMP detachment was 51-year-old Jamie Wilford Shanoss, the B.C. Coroners Service said Thursday.
The civilian-based Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been called in to investigate the death.
Shanoss died early Monday morning, a few hours after he had been taken into custody for allegedly being drunk in a public place.
"Shortly after 2 a.m., an RCMP member noticed Mr. Shanoss appeared to be unresponsive, and 911 was called," the Coroners Service said. "Resuscitative efforts were undertaken but were unsuccessful."
Shanoss was described as a member of the Gitxsan Nation, and residing in Prince George.
