Mayor Lyn Hall, right, applauds after presenting Thomas Dielissen with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers on behalf of the Governor General at city hall on Monday.

After Thomas Dielissen got the call from the Governor General's office saying he was being recognized for his volunteer work, he called right back.

He wasn't quite sure they had the right man.

Dielissen told that story to laughter as he watched the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers being pinned to his suit at the start of Monday night's council meeting

"I equate (The) Exploration Place with you," said Mayor Lyn Hall, noting Dielissen's nearly 25 years with the museum serving as president, chair and board member.

"Through his leadership and dedication... he has guided and positioned this organization for long-term success."

"There isn't a better person and more deserving person than Tom," said Hall, calling his volunteerism "exceptional."

Hall also read out a letter from David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

In it Johnston noted volunteers like Dielissen are "fundamental to the wellbeing of our country" that make both their communities and country stronger.

When Dielissen stood to present his medal, he received an extended standing ovation from a full public gallery on hand just for him.

"I could go on and on about your contributions," said Hall.

"There is no one better."
