An incident in Prince Rupert has gone from an aggravated assault investigation to an attempted murder allegation. The suspect is being held in Prince George awaiting an August court date.

RCMP said that the attack took place on June 24 at about 2:30 a.m. in the coastal city.

"A 31-year-old male partying at a residence in the area approached a group of people walking down the street shouting at them. The male then attacked one of the males in the group with a knife. The male was located and arrested at a residence," said Prince Rupert RCMP spokeswoman Const. Erin Mary Stevenson.

"The 20 year-old victim sustained a laceration to his neck that required several stitches," she added. "The 31-year-old male is known to Police and is currently on conditions not to consume alcohol."

Police gave no indication why the suspect chose to wield a knife at the young victim. The suspect was initially facing charge recommendations of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Upon further investigation, the RCMP is now recommending the charges be attempted murder, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, and two counts of breach of an undertaking.

His next court appearance is scheduled for August 9.
