The Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society is celebrating Prince George's multiculturalism by hosting a once-a-month market fair during the summer months.
"The idea is to invite home-based businesses to share their [unique offerings]," said Romana Pasca, the project's co-ordinator, "and also to have ethnic entertainment and ethnic food."
The first market will be held at the lawn of City Hall this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., one day after Canada multiculturalism day. The free event will include Persian, East Indian and South African food, Thai, Brazilian and South African dancers, a sari-wrapping workshop, ethnic art, lots of music, and games for children.
"We just offer people the colourful diversity of our city," Pasca said. "We are so diverse right now and we'd really like to celebrate that. That's the reason to come and experiment with different foods and witness ethnic entertainment."
This is not the first time the market has been held, but it is the first to run throughout the three summer months.
"We tried it once last year," Pasca said. "It was a big success. We had wonderful weather and lots of people visiting."
She added the society also wanted to work together with the local farmers markets.
The market is being funded with money from the Prince George Community Foundation.
