Mr. PG is all bundled up today, but it's not just to protect him from the wintery elements.

The Prince George icon is wearing fleece this week to promote National Sweater Day. On Feb. 9, Canadians are encouraged to put on sweaters and turn down the heat to conserve energy.

The national event is organized by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada.

According to the WWF, rethinking how much energy we use can make a large impact on climate change and if every Canadian lowered the heat a few degrees this winter, it would be akin to taking 300,000 vehicles off the road.

Locally, the initiative is backed by BC Hydro, Fortis BC and Natural Resources Canada.

"It's to give people an understanding that we have a choice in the matter of how we meet the challenge of climate change," said the city's community energy program manager Adrian Mohareb. "It's a chance for people to save money and to reduce their impact on the planet."

Mohareb had a hand in crafting the 12-foot long, 16-foot wide sweater out of old blankets with Bruce Edson and Jade Gregg, based on Edson's design.

According to BC Hydro, reducing your thermostat temperature by just two degrees can reduce your home heating costs by five per cent. Programming your thermostat to set back the temperature by five degrees for eight house every night can save approximately 10 per cent on your heating bill.
