It was a check stop of a different kind.
Members of the B.C. Highway Patrol put aside their ticket books and instead handed out jugs of windshield washer fluid and material promoting safe winter driving to motorists heading along Ospika Boulevard on Thursday afternoon.
Representatives from Yellowhead Road and Bridge and Insurance Corporation of British Columbia were also on hand.
"We're just doing a positive promotion around the idea of winter tires," ICBC road safety coordinator Doug Mac Donald said and went on to advise against trying to get by on all-season tires.
Switching over to winter tread "will make it that much more safer for you and other drivers out there."
And, even though the weather is supposed to warm up a bit over the next few days, Mac Donald said it's no reason to delay the step.
It's also time to get out to the vehicle a little earlier and be sure that your car or truck is completely cleared of snow and ice before you get behind the wheel.
"You don't want that stuff falling out on the highway or the roads and into someone else's path when you're driving," Mac Donald said.
Be sure to keep the fluids topped up, he also urged.
