People still seem to not be getting the message: don't speed in a school zone.

Prince George RCMP members from the Municipal Traffic Section conducted enforcement in city school zones from Sept. 4 to 18.

Here's the number of tickets that were issued during the two weeks:

  • Speeding in school zone: 154
  • Other speeding: 27
  • Distracted driving: 4
  • Excessive speed: 3
  • Occupant restraints: 2
  • Other violations: 26
  • Vehicle impounds: 5
  • Impaired drivers: 2

"Unfortunately, our officers found a significant amount of violations,” says acting Sergeant Charles Witwicki in a release.

One scary example was pointed to specifically.

One driver was stopped for going 110 km/h in a 30 km/h school zone.

Their actions landed them a violation ticket of $483 and the vehicle impounded for one week.

RCMP volunteers involved with the Citizens on Patrol Program were also conducting speed watches.

They saw a total of 1,258 vehicles and found 423 drivers also going over the limit of 30 km/h.

“Thirty-three percent of vehicles observed by our RCMP volunteers this year during the Back to School campaign were exceeding the posted 30 km/hr school zone, which is concerning,” adds Mike Burt, program coordinator in the same release.

Officers from the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) also participated in back to school campaigns with Prince George RCMP.

Of note, two commercial vehicles were impounded.

Cpl. Sonja Blom says one of the trucks was going 101 km/h in a 30 km/h zone.

Police are reminding drivers to obey all posted limits in school zones, which are in effect Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
