Nearly $100,000 has been earmarked for a flood diversion channel at Cottonwood Island Park.
Each of the federal and provincial governments and the city will provide $33,306 for a total of $99,919 for the project, the trio announced Tuesday.
The idea for the channel was one of several raised by an engineer slightly more than a year ago in answer to the spring and winter flooding the city endured in 2007-08. It's meant to provide something of a relief valve should ice on the main channel back up so much that homes and buildings along the bank are threatened with flooding.
The Nechako ice jam was a one-in-90-year event and was preceded by a one-in-20-year spring freshet. The study also found that past events like this occurred only when there a flow of at least 200 cubic metres per second and a temperature of -5 C or colder for 20 days.
