Kristin Houghtaling got a diamond ring as an early Mother's Day present on Saturday.

She only had to battle 14 other people and giant cake for it.

With her two daughters Layla and Charlotte there to cheer her on, Houghtaling was the winner of the Paris Jewellers Cake Dive at Pine Centre Mall.

"I like to do things like that. You can't win if you don't play," Houghtaling said. "It's just fun to do stuff like this. It's something different."

Fifteen competitors qualified on 97 Country FM for a chance to tear apart a four-foot-by-eight-foot cake to search for a Canadian diamond ring worth $2,400.

The competitors, wearing white overalls over their clothes, pulverized the cake with their bare hands. The search appeared to be over in seconds, with one woman triumphantly raising what she thought was the ring -but it turned out to just be a lollypop.

Houghtaling said she has signed up for several contests and competitions, and previously won a contest by being the first to find a needle in a haystack.

Her winning secret: "it's just good karma, I hope," she said.

Houghtaling said she hasn't decided if she will keep the ring or sell it to do some upgrades around her home.

Paris Jewellers has hosted the event for nine years at the chain's locations across Canada. Prince George was one of six locations to host the event this year.

Local manager Marjorie MacDonald said she hopes the chain will bring the event back to Prince George again in the future.

"The event went very well," MacDonald said. "It was exciting."
