BC Cancer’s breast cancer screening team is coming to northeast B.C. in September.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women, with around 3,500 B.C. women diagnosed each year, according to the Provincial Health Services Authority.

“More women in BC are being diagnosed with breast cancer, but fewer are dying from the disease. This is in large part due to early detection and treatment.” Dr. Colin Mar, medical director for the screening program, said in a release.

BC Cancer recommends women age 40 to 74 who have family with breast cancer receive a mammogram every year; women age 40 to 74 without a family history of breast cancer should schedule a mammogram every two years.

Roughly 10 per cent of all screening mammograms performed in B.C. are done on the mobile units. The state-of-the-art unit is equipped with digital screening mammograms, is wheelchair-accessible, and features a waiting area and private examination room.

BC Cancer will visit the following communities in northeast B.C.:

  • Mackenzie – Alexander Mackenzie Hotel
    • Sept. 8 – 12, 2020
  • Tumbler Ridge – Tumbler Ridge Inn
    • Sept. 14 – 15, 2020
