Miworth residents to further consider gravel pit proposal

A third public hearing meeting will be held on whether to allow a gravel pit to open up in Miworth.

Fraser-Fort George Regional District electoral area C director Lara Beckett made the decision to hold an additional meeting on Feb. 3 to give the proponent more time to come up with answers on such concerns as the number of trucks that would come in and out of the site, operating hours and the volume of material to be removed.

"We couldn't get that detail from the proponent at the meeting so we said 'look, we have to know this, so that people can decide on the actual proposal that they may have to deal with,'" Beckett said. "And so we adjourned again so that the proponent can get some firm numbers."

Parkline Place Holdings Ltd. is seeking a two-year temporary industrial use permit to extract aggregate from a 47-hectare (116-acre) site on Miworth Road just north of the intersection with Catherine Drive, just outside city limits, and carry out crushing and screening on the site.

When the first meeting was held on Nov. 25, the intention was to work a hectare at a time with follow-up reclamation for each section. But, by the time it was taken to the regional district board of directors in December, it had changed substantially as Parkline gained an opportunity to sell about 12 hectares (30 acres) to a company which also wants to crush and screen onsite.

As a result, the proposal was referred back out to neighbouring property owners and a second meeting was held on Jan. 6, which Beckett said drew about 20 people mostly from Miworth.

The Feb. 3 meeting will also be held at the Miworth Community Hall, 7:30 p.m. start.
