The Prince George Metis community is mourning the loss of one of B.C.'s most noted cultural figures, a former local resident.

Ray Harrold was living in the Fort St. John region, with strong family connections to Fort Nelson, when he passed away last week following a prolonged illness.

"Ray was well known throughout British Columbia for his time involved as one of the leaders of the Metis Nation in the late 1990s and early part of 2000. Ray continued to support Metis recognition and was a well known entrepreneur," said Patrick Pocha, a friend of Harrold and acting president of the Prince George Metis Community Association. "This is the man who inspired and encouraged us to be proud Metis."

A memorial service will be held today in Fort Nelson, and simultaneously in Prince George at the Blade Runners building (behind The Keg) starting at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
