Mental competence a question for alleged bank robber

The legal system is continuing to figure out what to do with an elderly man who was twice arrested for allegedly attempting two rob banks at the Spruceland Mall last summer.

The legal system is continuing to figure out what to do with an elderly man who was twice arrested for allegedly attempting two rob banks at the Spruceland Mall last summer.

Garry Robert Beaven, 76, was scheduled to appear in Prince George provincial court Wednesday for a disposition hearing but the appearance was put off, defence lawyer Jon Duncan said.

"We're considering asking for a supplemental medical examination to determine whether he is competent to deal with matters in the criminal justice system," Duncan said, and added there are "some significant mental health issues."

Beaven, 76, had been living in Simon Fraser Lodge but is now in a "locked down care centre," said Duncan.

Beaven was arrested on Aug. 13, 2010 after police responded to a call of a robbery at Scotiabank and then on Sept. 7, 2010, in response to a robbery at CIBC. In both cases, Beaven was apprehended a short distance away, was unarmed and using a walker, according to police.
