When there's no funding and a senior with health issues is on a limited budget there's very little chance they would get all the equipment they would need without a little help.

The owners of the local MEDIchair store decided they wanted to offer something special over the holidays so instead of just donating to other charities they decided to up their giving to offer seniors in need the chance to win a $500 gift certificate to the store so they could buy what they needed most, said Heather Hawes, operations manager, MEDIchair Northern BC.

Shirley Ankerstein, who has mobility issues, is especially grateful for that because she was the lucky winner.

"I got a four-wheeled walker with my gift certificate," said Ankerstein, who also needs a two-wheeled walker for indoors so that it will fit through her bathroom door.

Right now all her equipment she uses, including a hospital bed, is on loan from the local Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program and she really appreciates it.

"Thank you very much to MEDIchair," said Ankerstein. "I wouldn't have gotten the walker without the gift certificate."
