The nomination period for the upcoming School District No. 57 by-election has officially opened today and candidates are already being announced.
Audrey McKinnon, who ran as a candidate for the NDP in the 2021 federal election this fall, has announced she will now be running for a seat at the SD57 board table.
“The resignations of two strong community leaders from the Prince George School Board have left two vacancies in this foundational institution and I am running to fill one of those seats,” said McKinnon in a statement.
“I believe we can foster youth growth through the school system by creating an inclusive environment for students that fosters their mental health while supporting the work of educators and making proactive decisions with full transparency.”
McKinnon is a parent of an SD57 student as well as a local artist and former journalist, who currently works as a communications specialist for the BC Financial Services Authority.
SD57 will be holding a local general by-election on Saturday, January 15, 2022 following the resignations of former board chair Trent Derrick and vice-chair Shuirose Valimohamed in September.
The district will be electing one school trustee from the Mackenzie Trustee local area and one school trustee from the Prince George electoral area.
The nomination period for candidates is open from today (Nov. 30) until Dec. 10, 2021 at 4 p.m.
