One Alberta man is dead and another is missing after an avalanche in McBride swept away the two snowmobilers Saturday afternoon.
McBride RCMP said they were called to the lower Dore Mountain area at around 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
"Witnesses say that two males were caught up in the avalanche," Const. Todd Learning said Sunday afternoon. A group of men, also snowmobiling, witnessed the incident.
The first man was found on the surface, and a team used a long line to pull his body out of the area. The second man, also from Alberta, has yet to be located.
The Parks Canada long line team from Jasper and the Robson Valley Search and Rescue have been unable to get on the ground to search for the second man.
"(Saturday) evening due to poor weather conditions, diminishing light and extreme avalanche danger in the back country no one was put on the ground," Learning said.
Learning said avalanche technicians were testing the scene and doing controlled explosions to clear the area all day Sunday, but they may continue that work into Monday.
"They can't put anyone on the ground until they deem the area safe," he said.
Next of kin have been notified but RCMP are not releasing names.
