Prince George’s new mayor and city council will be sworn in on Monday night at their inaugural meeting.

Mayor Simon Yu and city councillors Tim Bennett, Garth Frizzell, Trudy Klassen, Ron Polillo, Cori Ramsay, Kyle Sampson, Susan Scott and Brian Skakun will take their oaths of office on Monday.

One of the first orders of business for the newly-sworn-in council will be to postpone their first regular meeting by a week. City council was expected to hold its first regular meeting on Nov. 21, however a report going before city council on Monday recommends that the meeting be pushed back to Nov. 28.

“Due to conflicting schedules, not all members of Council are available to attend the previously scheduled meeting and staff requests that Council consider moving the Regular Council meeting from Monday, November 21st to Monday, November 28th,” city manager of legislative services Maureen Connelly wrote in a report. “Further, Administration recommends scheduling a Committee of the Whole meeting for Wednesday, December 14, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow Council the opportunity to discuss and receive information regarding the police services review.”

Also up for consideration on Monday will be approval of the 2023 city council meeting schedule, which includes the new council’s first budget meetings on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1, 2023.

On Monday, city council will also be asked to appoint Yu and three other city council members to sit as directors of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George board of directors. If more than three councillors are nominated for the positions, members of council will vote to appoint the directors.

Council is also expected to nominate alternate directors to attend regional district meetings, should any of the four city directors be unable to attend.

City council will also receive a report on the official election results on Monday, and approve the schedule for acting mayor duties for the next four years.
