Other than a few periods slightly above and slightly below the normal temperatures, the weather in March was nondescript, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Jim Steele.

"There was no extended period of either [warmer or colder or colder than usual weather] and no abnormally cold or mild periods as well," Steele said. "This trend seemed to give the perception that it was a very cool month however in the end, temperatures ended up very close to normal."

The average daily high was 4.7 C, just below the norm of 5.0 C., the average daily low was -5.7 C. near the normal of -5.5 C, and the mean was -0.5 C, close to the norm of -0.3 C.

The warmest day was March 27 when the daytime high struck 10.1 C and the coldest was March 6, when the overnight low was down to -18.7 C.

Looking at precipitation, Steele said the first week was a bit wet but "thereafter not all that much excitement with some wet days and even a bit of snow near mid month.

"In the end, both snowfall and rainfall were below normal with the monthly rainfall showing the greatest departure from normal."

Total snowfall added up to 17 centimetres, 74 per cent of the normal of 22.9 cm, and total rainfaill was 2.5 mm, 19 per cent of the normal of 13.1 mm.

The greatest one-day snowfall was 6.0 cm on March 4 and the greatest rainfall was 0.8 mm on March 3. There was measurable precipitation on eight days, compared to the normal of 12 days

No new daily or month records were set.
